So who were these classical music zealots spending a week in 100-degree Baltimore?
The author of the article spends a week at a “band camp” for adult amateurs, performing with members of the Baltimore Symphony under Marin Alsop. It is a fascinating and insightful account of what it takes to play in orchestra from both an amateur and a professional perspective.
It reminds me a lot of the improvisation workshop I participated in this past April, which also was a healthy mix of pros and amateurs. While I wouldn’t want every workshop to be this way, I find it’s particularly healthy musically, socially, and pedagogically to participate in such scenarios.
